READING
1.0 Word Analysis, Fluency and Systematic Vocabulary Development

1.1 & 1.2 Identify and use the literal and figurative meanings of words and understand word derivations and distinguish between the denotative and connotative meanings of words and interpret the connotative power of words.

What it looks like: Students will begin to notice the power of words to convey meanings beyond the literal or denotative. They will note this in their analysis of selected texts in both written and oral form.

Rubric:
10 The students will note the intentional use of both literal and suggestive meanings, as well as the denotative and connotative implications in authentic language. They will independently and reliably report such language in both written and oral presentations.
8 The students will frequently identify loaded words as used by authors. They may present their insights in oral or written form.
6 The students will occasionally identify connotative words or the figurative meaning of words. Their discussion, whether written or oral, may be more tentative and less convincing. They sometimes need assistance in articulating their insights.
4 The students need assistance in identifying connotative words or figurative meanings and distinguishing between a word’s literal meaning or denotation and additional meanings it may suggest.
2 The students cannot reliably distinguish between the literal and figurative use of words, nor can they differentiate denotation and connotation in words. They are consistently confused.

How it is assessed: Once every five to ten class sessions, the students will apply the above rubric to an oral discussion of a passage or a written interpretation of a work. The student will self-assess before the teacher assesses.
