Writing Revisions

1.9 Revise writing to improve the logic and coherence of the organization and controlling perspective, the precision of word choice, and the tone by taking into consideration the audience, purpose, and formality of the context.
What it looks like: Student essays will include multiple drafts and clear evidence of improvement in each subsequent draft, specifically in the areas of diction and tone. The purpose and the level of formality in the text will be appropriate to the audience.
Rubric: 10 In formal essays, submitted periodically, students will include multiple drafts that exhibit clear evidence of improvement in each subsequent draft. The drafts will demonstrate stylistic improvement, specifically with regard to word choice and tone, a controlling perspective and attention to audience.
8 Formal essays will include multiple drafts that demonstrate improvement with each draft. There will be evidence of some improvement in style, word choice and tone. The final draft will have a controlling perspective and will take into account its audience.
6 Formal essays will include at least two drafts. The writing will reveal some improvement, specifically in style, word choice and tone. The final draft will have a perspective that may be inconsistent, but will show improvement in style, word choice and tone.
4 Formal essays will include a least one draft. The writing, from rough draft to final draft, will reveal minimal improvement in style, word choice and tone. The final draft will have problems with maintaining a consistent tone.
2 Formal essays may include a rough draft. The final essay will have problems maintaining consistency in style, word choice and tone.
How it is assessed: Once or twice per semester, students will submit a formal piece of writing, with attached drafts, that will exhibit clear evidence of improvement , especially in the areas of diction and tone. The student will apply the rubric above to self-assess before the teacher assesses. The student will have multiple opportunities to re-write.
